Not every tour listed online is worth your time. These six are genuinely good and within
reasonable reach from Playa Honda.
Timanfaya National Park
35 min drive The volcanic heart of Lanzarote. The Fire Mountains are unlike anything else in Europe — still geothermally active, with live demonstrations of heat vents at the surface. A guided bus tour is mandatory (no independent walking). Book tickets in advance — they sell out.
→ Go early morning before coaches arrive.
Jameos del Agua
40 min drive A volcanic cave system running down to a saltwater lagoon. Inside lives the jameíto — a blind, albino freshwater crab found nowhere else on earth. The cave also contains a concert hall and an open-air restaurant. One of César Manrique's most impressive projects on the island.
→ Combine with Cueva de los Verdes nearby.
Cueva de los Verdes
40 min drive A 2km walk through a dramatic lava tube formed by the Volcán de la Corona eruption. The guided tour ends with a famous optical illusion — we won't spoil it. One of the best cave experiences in the Canary Islands.
→ Adjacent to Jameos del Agua — do both on the same day.
Fundación César Manrique
15 min drive The home and studio of Lanzarote's most famous artist, built directly into five volcanic lava bubbles. Now a museum, it's a remarkable example of architecture working with the landscape rather than against it. Essential for anyone interested in art, design, or the island's identity.
→ Just outside Arrecife — easy half-day trip.
Boat trips & dolphin watching
From Puerto del Carmen (15 min) Glass-bottom boat tours, catamaran sailing trips, and whale and dolphin watching excursions depart regularly from Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Sightings of bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales are common in the Atlantic waters off Lanzarote.
→ Morning departures have calmer seas.
Playa de Papagayo
45 min drive A cluster of sheltered golden-sand beaches in the south of the island, within the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches. No hotels, no commercial development — just spectacular natural beaches. Requires a short drive on an unpaved track and a small access fee.
→ A hire car is needed — no public transport.
